Is Ceramic Tint Worth It? What You Notice in a CDA Summer

Matt Leitholt • October 27, 2026

Is ceramic tint worth it? I get asked this at our Coeur d'Alene shop all the time, usually by someone who just climbed into a car that's been sitting in a parking lot all afternoon. My honest answer: for most people around here, yes. Here's what you actually notice once it's on your car, and how to decide if it's right for you.

What ceramic tint does that you can feel

A huge difference in the heat you feel

This is the big one. With our ceramic film, you'll feel about 70% less heat coming through the glass. That's the heat on your arm on the drive home, the hot seat you slide into, and the sun on the back of your kids' necks.

In a CDA summer, that adds up fast. A car parked at the beach, at work, or in a grocery store lot in July turns into an oven. Ceramic tint doesn't make summer go away, but the difference is something you notice every single drive.

Your AC works a lot better

When less heat comes through the glass, your AC isn't fighting the sun the whole time. The cabin cools down faster after you start the car, and it stays comfortable once it gets there. On longer drives, like heading to Spokane Valley on I-90 on a July afternoon, you'll notice it most.

A boost in privacy

If you go with a darker shade, ceramic tint also gives you more privacy, so it's harder to see into your car and what you've left on the seat. If you'd rather keep the factory look, clear ceramic tint is hardly noticeable on the glass and still means about 70% less heat you feel. Either way, you get the comfort.

Less glare and less UV fading

Ceramic tint also cuts glare and cuts down the UV that fades your dash and seats over time. Long summer days here mean a lot of sun on your interior, so that protection is worth having.

Ceramic tint vs regular tint

Everything we tint is ceramic, except the front two windows, where we also offer carbon.

Carbon tint, which we offer only for the front two windows, is mostly about looks and privacy. It darkens the glass and gives your front windows a clean look that matches the factory privacy glass in back.

Ceramic tint is about comfort. It's built to cut the heat you feel, not just darken the window. That's the difference people are really asking about when they search "ceramic tint vs regular tint."

Dyed tint is the one to watch out for. It's sometimes what the dealership sells when you buy the car. It makes the windows darker, but dyed tint really doesn't block much heat at all. Going from dyed tint to ceramic is a huge difference you feel the first time you get in on a hot day.

If you only care about the look of your front two windows, carbon can do the job there. But if comfort in summer is the reason you're thinking about tint in the first place, ceramic is the one I'd point you to.

Ceramic tint is a popular choice in our area, and I think it comes down to how we drive. North Idaho and the Spokane area get real summer heat, and a lot of us spend that season in the car: commuting between CDA and Spokane, heading to the lake, or running around town with the windows up and the AC on. If you're coming over from Spokane Valley or Liberty Lake, it's the same story: the goal is a car that's comfortable in July.

"My back windows are already tinted"

A lot of SUVs, trucks, and vans come with dark factory glass in the back. That's privacy glass, not true window tint, and it doesn't do much against the heat you feel. Clear ceramic tint on those rear windows barely changes how they look but makes the back seat a lot more comfortable. For more on this, read factory privacy glass vs window tint.

What ceramic tint costs

Our tint is generally $450 to $650 for the sides and rear, depending on the vehicle, and around $220 for the front two windows. Idaho sales tax (6%) is added, and we confirm your final price with your year, make, and model. For the full breakdown, read how much is window tinting.

Our tint comes with a lifetime manufacturer warranty covering defects and fading.

A note on tint laws

Idaho and Washington have different tint rules, and drivers around here cross that line all the time. Please check the tint laws for the state your vehicle is registered in before choosing a shade. Any tint outside those laws is considered for off-road use only. For more, read our guide to Idaho vs Washington tint laws.

Window tinting in CDA: book a consultation and try our sun simulator

The easiest way to decide if ceramic tint is worth it is to feel it yourself. Book a consultation at our Coeur d'Alene shop and try our sun simulator. It's a heat lamp with tint samples in front of it: normal glass, factory dyed privacy glass like many SUVs have in back, ceramic window tint, and clear ceramic window tint. Put your hand behind each one and you'll feel the difference between all of them yourself.

A consultation is what I'd recommend, since you can see the shades, feel the heat, and ask questions in person. Call us at (208) 244-6961 to set one up.
